How Often Is There a 6-0 Set? Tennis Bagels and Breadsticks
How often does a set end 6-0, who hands it out at each price, and how often does the bagel winner still lose? Tour-level results across both tours.

A 6-0 set feels like an event when you watch one. A player simply stops winning games for half an hour, and the crowd goes quiet. I wanted to know how often that really happens at tour level, who dishes it out at each price, and whether a bagel tells you anything reliable about who wins. The study covers 114,493 completed ATP and WTA singles matches with full set scores.
The headline: 8.5% of matches contained at least one 6-0 set, but the tours split sharply, with 11.8% in the WTA against 6.3% in the ATP. Price matters even more than tour, and a bagel is not the end of the story, because 9.6% of first-set bagel winners still lost the match. If you want this applied match by match, my free tennis picks page is where I do it.
Period 1Slow clay breeds bagels, fast grass protects servers
Surface shapes this market more than anything except price. In ATP best-of-3, the bagel rate runs 7.3% on clay, 5.0% on hard courts and just 3.6% on grass. On grass a big serve buys a hold almost for free, so even a badly outplayed opponent tends to sneak a game onto the board.
The WTA sits higher on every surface. Clay leads at 12.8% across 12,732 matches, hard courts follow at 11.9% and grass trails at 9.1%. ATP best-of-5 reaches 9.5% over 13,072 matches, which makes sense: more sets give a dominant player more chances to run one through without dropping a game.
Matches: 30,721 / 18,847 / 4,566 / 27,641 / 12,732 / 5,104 / 13,072.

| Share of completed matches containing a bagel | |
|---|---|
| ATP hard | 5.0% |
| ATP clay | 7.3% |
| ATP grass | 3.6% |
| WTA hard | 11.9% |
| WTA clay | 12.8% |
| WTA grass | 9.1% |
| ATP best of 5 | 9.5% |
What strikes me most is that WTA grass, the lowest women's split, still sits above ATP clay, the highest men's best-of-3 figure. Double bagels are a different matter. They came up in 0.5% of WTA matches (228) and 0.1% of ATP best-of-3 matches (64), and I treat them as curiosities rather than something to bet on.
Period 2Most matches never get close to a bagel
This chart takes the widest set in each match and asks how lopsided it got. In ATP best-of-3, 50.5% of matches had no set wider than 6-3. In the WTA that figure drops to 34.4%, so blowout sets are a routine part of the women's game in a way they are not for the men.
Look at the WTA bar in full. The widest set was a 6-0 in 11.8% of matches, a 6-1 in 25.7% and a 6-2 in 28.1%. ATP best-of-5 sits between the two tours: 27.0% of those matches had a 6-1 as their widest set and 33.0% had nothing wider than 6-3.
Matches: 55,753 / 13,072 / 45,668.

| 6-0 set | 6-1 at worst | 6-2 at worst | No set wider than 6-3 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ATP best of 3 | 5.6% | 18.6% | 25.3% | 50.5% |
| ATP best of 5 | 9.5% | 27.0% | 30.6% | 33.0% |
| WTA best of 3 | 11.8% | 25.7% | 28.1% | 34.4% |
For a bettor, the breadstick is the more realistic target. In the WTA, a 6-1 as the most one-sided set turned up roughly twice as often as a 6-0. If you want exposure to a rout, the wider margin bands give you more of the outcomes that actually happen.
Period 3Short-priced favourites hand out bagels far more often
Price is the strongest signal in the study. With a favourite under 1.15, the favourite won at least one set 6-0 in 14.2% of best-of-3 matches, while the underdog managed it in 0.4%. As the match tightens, the favourite's line drops steadily: 4.9% at 1.50-1.69 and 3.4% at 1.90-2.00.
The underdog's line rises to meet it. At 1.50-1.69 the underdog bagelled in 2.6% of matches, and in genuine coin-flips at 1.90-2.00 it was 3.1%, almost level with the favourite. One caution here. Bagels are only a small share of sets, so each price split rests on a few hundred of them, and closing odds are missing for some seasons.

| Favourite wins a set 6-0 | Underdog wins a set 6-0 | |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1.15 | 14.2% | 0.4% |
| 1.15-1.29 | 8.7% | 1.0% |
| 1.30-1.49 | 6.1% | 1.8% |
| 1.50-1.69 | 4.9% | 2.6% |
| 1.70-1.89 | 4.0% | 3.2% |
| 1.90-2.00 | 3.4% | 3.1% |
My reading is that in close matches a 6-0 set is usually a mood swing, not a mismatch. One player loses rhythm for a set, and it can happen to either side of the net.
Period 4Winning a set 6-0 does not settle the match
Of 3,620 first sets won 6-0, the bagel winner went on to lose the match 9.6% of the time. That is roughly one in ten, and it is the figure I come back to whenever I see someone treat an opening bagel as a finished contest. The player on the wrong end often resets completely once the scoreboard clears.
Second-set bagels came back to bite less often, at 7.8% across 4,552 cases, often because the bagel winner had already dropped set 1. Best-of-5 is the least forgiving: the bagel winner lost 9.0% of the time across 1,297 bagels, against 7.4% in best of 3, because there is more road left for the match to turn.
| 6-0 set | Bagels | Bagel winner lost | 95% range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Set 1 | 3,620 | 9.6% | ยฑ1.0 |
| Set 2 | 4,552 | 7.8% | ยฑ0.8 |
| Set 3-5, best of 5 | 706 | 9.3% | ยฑ2.1 |
| Any set, best of 3 | 8,814 | 7.4% | ยฑ0.5 |
| Any set, best of 5 | 1,297 | 9.0% | ยฑ1.6 |
None of this means you should fade the bagel winner, because the large majority still close the match out. It does mean live prices can overreact to a 6-0, and a single lopsided set says less about the remaining sets than it appears to.
Full-time verdict
A favourite under 1.15 bagelled in 14.2% of best-of-3 matches, but only 3.4% at 1.90-2.00. Check the closing price range before you look at form or reputation.
ATP grass produced a bagel in 3.6% of matches against 12.8% on WTA clay. The same price on a different surface points to a different scoreline.
9.6% of first-set bagel winners still lost the match. Do not chase a short live price on the strength of one 6-0.
