How Many Points Are Scored in an NBA Game? Total Points Bands
Combined NBA scores now cluster in the 220s and 230s, the old sub-200 game has almost vanished, and the playoffs still play to a different, slower tune.

Totals are my bread and butter, and the first thing I want to know before pricing any NBA game is where combined scores actually land. Not where they landed when I started watching, but now. So I split 30,930 games into 10-point bands, counted how often each one came up and turned those shares into fair odds.
The headline answer: across the last five seasons the most common band is 220-229, hit in 19.5% of games, with an average of 226.7 and a median of 226. I use this as the baseline behind every totals angle on my NBA betting tips page, because it tells you how wide the realistic range of outcomes really is.
Period 1Recent totals cluster tightly around the 220s and 230s
This is the distribution of 6,605 games from 2021-22 to 2025-26, overtime included because that is how totals bets settle. The 220-229 band leads at 19.5%, with 230-239 right behind at 18.5% and 210-219 at 17.2%. Those three bands together carry the bulk of the market.
Even so, only 38.5% of games finished within 10 points of the 226.7 average. That is the number I keep coming back to. A team's pace and efficiency profile can point you to the right neighbourhood, but a single night spreads widely around it.

| Share of 6,605 games, 2021-22 to 2025-26, overtime included | |
|---|---|
| Under 190 | 3.0% |
| 190-199 | 5.7% |
| 200-209 | 10.8% |
| 210-219 | 17.2% |
| 220-229 | 19.5% |
| 230-239 | 18.5% |
| 240-249 | 12.0% |
| 250+ | 13.3% |
Look at the tails as well. Games of 250+ came up in 13.3% of the sample, more often than the 240-249 band, while under 190 is down at 3.0%. Overtime does a lot of the work in that top bucket.
Period 2The sub-200 game has been replaced by the 230-point game
Here I compare the 2002-03 to 2010-11 window, 11,744 games, with the last five seasons. Back then, 40.0% of games finished under 190 and the 190-199 band alone held 19.3%. Now those figures are 3.0% and 5.7%.
At the other end, 250+ games went from 0.9% to 13.3%. The whole distribution has slid upwards, and the shape has shifted with it. Older totals were bunched at the bottom; modern ones peak in the middle with a fat upper tail.

| 2002-03 to 2010-11 | 2021-22 to 2025-26 | |
|---|---|---|
| Under 190 | 40.0% | 3.0% |
| 190-199 | 19.3% | 5.7% |
| 200-209 | 16.7% | 10.8% |
| 210-219 | 11.3% | 17.2% |
| 220-229 | 6.9% | 19.5% |
| 230-239 | 3.4% | 18.5% |
| 240-249 | 1.5% | 12.0% |
| 250+ | 0.9% | 13.3% |
For a bettor this is a warning about stale instincts. A total that felt huge a decade or two ago is now a routine number, and any mental model built on the older game will undershoot.
Period 3High-scoring games climbed season by season
This line tracks the two extremes by season. Games under 200 made up 67.9% in 2002-03 and just 5.4% in 2025-26. The 250-point game moved the opposite way, from 0.4% to 17.1%.
The change was not a single step. The sub-200 line erodes through the middle years, then the 250+ line kicks up sharply later in the sample, which matches the spread of three-point volume and faster pace across the league.

|---|---|---|
| 2002-03 | 0.4% | 67.9% |
| 2003-04 | 0.2% | 75.1% |
| 2004-05 | 0.6% | 61.6% |

| 2006-07 | 1.3% | 58.2% |
| 2007-08 | 1.1% | 52.4% |
| 2008-09 | 2.0% | 52.2% |
| 2009-10 | 1.1% | 49.7% |
| 2010-11 | 1.0% | 55.4% |
| 2011-12 | 0.3% | 66.5% |
| 2012-13 | 0.5% | 59.0% |
| 2013-14 | 1.4% | 46.6% |
| 2014-15 | 1.1% | 50.9% |
| 2015-16 | 1.4% | 39.9% |
| 2016-17 | 2.7% | 28.0% |
| 2017-18 | 3.0% | 26.1% |
| 2018-19 | 9.0% | 13.7% |
| 2019-20 | 9.8% | 11.7% |
| 2020-21 | 10.0% | 11.4% |
| 2021-22 | 7.7% | 15.3% |
| 2022-23 | 14.5% | 6.4% |
| 2023-24 | 14.2% | 7.8% |
| 2024-25 | 12.8% | 8.4% |
| 2025-26 | 17.1% | 5.4% |
What I take from it: the trend is real and has not reversed, so recent seasons deserve far more weight than long-run averages when I build a totals view.
Period 4Fair odds by band, and the playoffs run lower
Fair odds here are simply 1 divided by the share. The 220-229 band prices at 5.13, 230-239 at 5.39 and 210-219 at 5.80. The extremes sit far longer, with under 190 at 33.19 and 250+ at 7.54.
The split columns are where the edge in thinking lies. In the recent playoffs, 9.5% of games finished under 190 and 17.8% landed on 200-209, against 2.6% and 10.2% in the regular season. Meanwhile 250+ games fell from 13.9% to 4.3%.
| Total points | Games | Share | Fair odds | Reg. season | Playoffs |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 190 | 199 | 3.0% | 33.19 | 2.6% | 9.5% |
| 190-199 | 374 | 5.7% | 17.66 | 5.2% | 11.6% |
| 200-209 | 712 | 10.8% | 9.28 | 10.2% | 17.8% |
| 210-219 | 1,138 | 17.2% | 5.80 | 17.0% | 19.7% |
| 220-229 | 1,288 | 19.5% | 5.13 | 19.5% | 19.4% |
| 230-239 | 1,225 | 18.5% | 5.39 | 18.9% | 14.0% |
| 240-249 | 793 | 12.0% | 8.33 | 12.6% | 3.8% |
| 250+ | 876 | 13.3% | 7.54 | 13.9% | 4.3% |
The caveat: these are historical frequencies, not a system, the fair odds carry no bookmaker margin, and the playoff columns rest on just 422 games. I treat them as a direction of travel, not a precise price.
Full-time verdict
The 220-229 band is the single most common outcome at 19.5%, fair odds 5.13. Start there and adjust for pace and rotation news rather than starting from an old-era number.
Games of 250+ came up in 13.3% of recent games and 17.1% in 2025-26. Overtime feeds that tail, so do not dismiss high bands as long shots.
Playoff games reached 250 points only 4.3% of the time against 13.9% in the regular season. Slower, tighter series games need lower expectations, though the 422-game sample calls for caution.
