Second-Half Correct Score: Fair Odds for the Score After the Break
After the break, goals come more often and the goalless half loses ground. These are the scores and fair prices that 183,622 European league matches produce in the second half alone.

Most bettors treat the second-half correct score as a smaller copy of the first-half market. I wanted to test that against the record. The sample covers 183,622 league matches with half-time scores across 22 European divisions, from 2000/01-2025/26. For each match I took the full-time score minus the half-time score, so every second half is read as a standalone contest.
The answer is that the two halves are different markets. The second half averages 1.48 goals against 1.16 before the break, and a goalless second half comes up in 22.5% of matches compared with 31.1% for the first half. One honest caveat applies throughout: these are historical frequencies across an average match, and second halves carry more stoppage time, which accounts for part of the extra scoring.
Period 1Goalless still leads, but 1-0 sits close behind
This chart ranks the scores produced after the break, with home goals first. 0-0 is still the single most common outcome at 22.5%, followed by 1-0 at 19.0%, 0-1 at 14.6% and 1-1 at 11.8%. If you came here from my football tips for today page, this is the background I lean on before I price any half market.
183,622 matches. Second-half score = full-time minus half-time goals.

| Goals scored after the break only, home goals first | |
|---|---|
| 0-0 | 22.5% |
| 1-0 | 19.0% |
| 0-1 | 14.6% |
| 1-1 | 11.8% |
| 2-0 | 8.2% |
| 0-2 | 5.2% |
| 2-1 | 4.9% |
| 1-2 | 3.8% |
| 3-0 | 2.5% |
| 2-2 | 1.5% |
| 0-3 | 1.3% |
| 3-1 | 1.3% |
What stands out to me is how quickly the bars shorten after the top four. 2-0 holds 8.2%, and every result beyond that is a niche outcome. The home side's edge still appears in the second half: 1-0 beats 0-1 clearly, which fits the 0.83 to 0.65 split in second-half goals.
Period 2The second half trades goalless draws for goals
Here each score is plotted for both halves. 0-0 is the one large move: it falls from 31.1% in the first half to 22.5% in the second. 1-0 and 0-1 also drop slightly, while 1-1, 2-0, 0-2, 2-1 and 1-2 all become more common after the break.
Tactically this matches what I see each week. Managers chase games, substitutes add pace against tired legs and defensive shape loosens. Four or more goals arrive in 6.0% of second halves against 3.0% of first halves, which is about twice as often.
Goals per half: first 1.16 (home 0.66, away 0.50); second 1.48 (home 0.83, away 0.65).
View the data: first half vs second half: the same score?
| First half | Second half | |
|---|---|---|
| 0-0 (41,402 second halves) | 31.1% | 22.5% |
| 1-0 (34,957 second halves) | 20.8% | 19.0% |
| 0-1 (26,849 second halves) | 15.7% | 14.6% |
| 1-1 (21,732 second halves) | 10.4% | 11.8% |
| 2-0 (15,113 second halves) | 6.8% | 8.2% |
| 0-2 (9,636 second halves) | 4.1% | 5.2% |
| 2-1 (9,058 second halves) | 3.3% | 4.9% |
| 1-2 (6,909 second halves) | 2.5% | 3.8% |
A 1-1 second half at 11.8% is more common than a 1-1 first half at 10.4%. That is a small gap, but it moves the price.
Period 3Fair odds shorten on goals and drift on 0-0
The table converts each share into a fair decimal price with no margin. A goalless second half is fair at 4.44, against 3.22 for the first half. 1-0 is fair at 5.25 after the break and 4.82 before it. 0-1 is fair at 6.84 and 6.39.
The scoring results move the other way. 1-1 is fair at 8.45 in the second half and 9.61 in the first. 2-1 drops to 20.27 from 30.35, and 2-2 falls to 67.76 from 120.65.
| Score in the half | Second halves | 2nd-half share | 2nd-half fair | 1st-half share | 1st-half fair |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0-0 | 41,402 | 22.5% | 4.44 | 31.1% | 3.22 |
| 1-0 | 34,957 | 19.0% | 5.25 | 20.8% | 4.82 |
| 0-1 | 26,849 | 14.6% | 6.84 | 15.7% | 6.39 |
| 1-1 | 21,732 | 11.8% | 8.45 | 10.4% | 9.61 |
| 2-0 | 15,113 | 8.2% | 12.15 | 6.8% | 14.62 |
| 0-2 | 9,636 | 5.2% | 19.06 | 4.1% | 24.35 |
| 2-1 | 9,058 | 4.9% | 20.27 | 3.3% | 30.35 |
| 1-2 | 6,909 | 3.8% | 26.58 | 2.5% | 39.57 |
| 3-0 | 4,504 | 2.5% | 40.77 | 1.6% | 63.38 |
| 2-2 | 2,710 | 1.5% | 67.76 | 0.8% | 120.65 |
The practical lesson is that you should not reuse a first-half price sheet for the second half. Doing so leaves the goalless score too short and the scoring results too long.
Period 4The pre-match price reshapes the second-half map
This heatmap splits second halves by the home side's pre-match price at a major bookmaker. When the home side is priced under 1.50 (17,596 matches), 1-0 leads at 23.8%, 0-0 falls to 17.3% and 2-0 reaches 15.7%. With home odds of 4.00+ (13,682 matches), 0-1 becomes the top score at 22.6% and 2-0 drops to 2.9%.
The goalless half is most common in the middle. In the 2.00โ2.79 band (73,747 matches), 0-0 reaches 24.2%, ahead of 1-0 at 18.8% and 0-1 at 15.5%.

| 0-0 | 1-0 | 0-1 | 1-1 | 2-0 | 0-2 | 2-1 | 1-2 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home < 1.50 (17,596) | 17.3% | 23.8% | 6.9% | 9.9% | 15.7% | 1.5% | 6.6% | 2.1% |
| Home 1.50โ1.99 (51,042) | 22.3% | 22.1% | 11.9% | 11.8% | 10.2% | 3.4% | 5.6% | 3.1% |
| Home 2.00โ2.79 (73,747) | 24.2% | 18.8% | 15.5% | 12.3% | 7.2% | 5.3% | 4.7% | 3.8% |
| Home 2.80โ3.99 (24,592) | 23.3% | 14.9% | 18.9% | 12.1% | 5.1% | 8.0% | 4.0% | 4.8% |
| Home 4.00+ (13,682) | 19.9% | 9.9% | 22.6% | 11.6% | 2.9% | 12.0% | 3.2% | 6.0% |
My reading is that evenly matched sides lack a dominant team to break the deadlock. That is why the overall average says little about any single fixture.
Full-time verdict
A goalless second half is fair at 4.44, while the first half is fair at 3.22. Treat these as two markets with two price sheets.
With the home side under 1.50, the second half ended 2-0 to the home side in 15.7% of matches. Only back that score where the gap in quality is real.
In the 2.00โ2.79 home-price band, the second half finished 0-0 in 24.2% of matches. Check whether the prices offered reflect that level of caution.
